Is Sedentary Lifestyle is a Silent Killer??

A sedentary lifestyle is defined as a type of lifestyle with no physical activity. An individual living a sedentary lifestyle is usually sitting or lying down while busy in an action like reading, watching television or using a mobile phone/computer for much of the day.

Walking 10,000 steps a day (approximately 5 miles) is the perfect target to set for improving health and reducing the health risks caused by idleness, agreed by health professionals. Even if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, you may not be able to offset the effects brought on by a lack of activity throughout the rest the day.

Any extended sitting such as behind a desk at work or behind a wheel can be harmful to your health.

  • It is linked to high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels.

Worldwide, it is predicted that a sedentary lifestyle is accountable for 6% of coronary heart disease cases, 7% of diabetes, 10% of breast cancer and 10% of colon cancer cases. It was recently reported that inactivity is responsible for more annual deaths than smoking.

Simple Ways to Convert Your Sedentary Lifestyle

  • Take the stairs instead of elevators
  • If possible, walk or bike to work
  • Maximize the benefits from your grocery trip
  • Take walk-break while working continuously
  • Play with your kids
  • While watching TV, pace or stretch
  • While talking on the phone take a walk
  • Take active vacations
