Thyroid disease is a worldwide common disease. Majority of women are thyroid patients. Thyroid diseases are different from other diseases in terms of diagnosis, accessibility of medical treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment is needed for this disease. 42 million people in India suffer from thyroid diseases. Thyroid A small, butterfly shaped gland located in the neck below and behind Adam's apple is known as thyroid. Weights of a healthy thyroid are about one ounce. Thyroid hormone is produced by thyroid which is essential for our body. Thyroid gland can absorb iodine. By taking iodine from our diet thyroid converts it into thyroid hormones and it combines amino acid tyrosine and iodine to make the thyroid hormone. Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3) are the two hormones produced by thyroid. The hormone regulates cells, organs, tissues, and glands use oxygen and energy. There are a number of diseases that can affect thyroid gland. Hashimoto's Disease This is an autoimmune disease, means that immune system wrongly attacks your own thyroid gland. Hashimoto's disease typically causes redness and gradual annihilation of thyroid gland. Most people with Hashimoto's have hypothyroidism, a state of insufficient thyroid hormone. Graves’ disease When your immune system improperly produces antibodies, known as thyroid stimulating antibodies (TSI) it leads to Graves’ disease. By over stimulating thyroid gland, it overproduces thyroid hormone. The overstimulation of the thyroid result hyperthyroidism. Risk Factors The key risk factors for thyroid disease include: • Iodine deficiency or excess • Exposure to radioactivity or radioactive fallout • Surgery or trauma to the neck area • Pregnancy or recent childbirth • Female gender • Personal or family history of autoimmune disease • Cigarette smoking
